Geography

At Swillington Primary School, our mission is to provide a transformative cradle to career education that allows our children to enjoy lives of choice and opportunity.

At Swillington Primary School, we provide our children with the opportunities to become global citizens, deepening their interest and wonder in exploring their own place in the world. Through our curriculum, our children will develop a sense of their world at local, national and global scales understanding the interconnections between people and the environment. Fieldwork is an essential part of this. Pupils learn to think critically, think spatially, use maps, visual images and new technologies, including geographical information systems to analyse and present information. They will have a rich understanding of their responsibility and recognise how they can respect the environment within their own society and the world. As Geographers, the children will develop their knowledge of significant places, understand physical and human geographical features and interpret geographical information.

At Swillington, we build on children’s Geographical knowledge and skills by focusing learning around developing these 5 themes outlined in the National Curriculum:

  • Locational knowledge
  • Place knowledge
  • Human and Physical geography
  • Geographical skills
  • Fieldwork
